Food is powerful medicine

 

Whether you are learning your way around the kitchen, enhancing your cooking skills or trying to eat healthy on a budget, our cooking class are for you! Led by Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator, Jen Newton, these hands-on cooking classes let you explore a new cooking style while teaching you how to use food as medicine. You will learn how ingredients can lower inflammation, prevent cancer and reduce our risk of type 2 diabetes, all while being mindful about food budgets. Each class will build your confidence in the kitchen, inspiring change through food education, and ultimately empowering you to eat for your wellbeing!

 

Jennifer Newton

 

Jennifer Newton is the Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator for the Sky Lakes Wellness Center. Trained by Dr. Harlan at Tulane School of Medicine Teaching Kitchen in New Orleans, Jennifer is leading the Mindful Meals Cooking Classes.

 

She grew up in Oklahoma where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in German and a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences, before moving to Klamath Falls in 2005 to work with the bariatric program and outpatient diabetes education program at Sky Lakes Medical Center. In 2016, she completed her Master of Public Health from Des Moines University.

Does reading a recipe feel like reading a foreign language? Not sure what the difference is between a skillet and a sauce pan?

 

Intro to Cooking: Part 1 will teach you how to translate recipes into plan English and will demystify cooking. After completing this class, take Intro to Cooking: Part 2 to learn basic knife skills.

Not sure what the difference is between chopping and dicing? Unsure what knife to use?

 

Intro to Cooking: Part 2 helps you learn basic knife skills and practice reading a recipe while you prepare delicious creations using your new talents!

 

Must complete Intro to Cooking: Part 1 prior to enrolling in this class.
