What is a Trauma and Stroke Registrar?

Kalissa is our Trauma and Stroke Registrar. Kalissa can answer questions like “how fast are stroke patients seeing a doctor?” or “how many trauma cases require transfer to higher level of care?”

From the time a patient rolls through the Emergency Department doors, data begins to accumulate. This data tells the patient’s story. The Trauma & Stroke Registrar translates their story from cause of injury, onset of symptoms, vital signs, times to procedures, procedures performed, patient outcomes and a multitude of data elements into documents that describe big-picture, time-sensitive patient care at Sky Lakes.

Kalissa started working at Sky Lakes in 2015 when the Oregon Health Authority created the position based on local trauma data and the needs of the area. On a day-to-day basis she is analyzing, abstracting, and coding patient charts – approximately 350-400 trauma and 250-300 stroke charts annually – into respective databases.

Kalissa is on the front lines when it comes to program projects like decreasing door- to- disposition times for trauma patients, i.e. the time a patient comes into the Emergency Department to the time they leave. She turns direct patient-care documentation into clear, concise and creative comprehensive reports to drive performance improvement processes in the Emergency Department.

Trauma Registrars are vital to improving patient care. Kalissa is a valuable Sky Lakes employee, and we are so happy to have her with us.
