When There’s No One Left: The Need for Private Guardians

“The measure of a community is how it protects its most vulnerable.”

Every week, patients are seen by the Sky Lakes Case Management team for assistance making the transition from the hospital back to their homes or into long-term care. Some of these discharges are seamless—family is involved, paperwork is in place, and decisions are clear. But all too often, we meet patients who can’t make decisions for themselves and do not have anyone legally authorized to help.

These are some of the most heartbreaking cases. People living with advanced dementia, brain injuries, or other serious health conditions who cannot safely return home—but also can’t move forward without a legal decision-maker.

In these situations, we often look for a guardian—someone who can legally act in the best interest of the patient. But here’s the challenge: the number of people in our community who need guardians is growing, and our existing resources aren’t enough.

With the rise in cognitive conditions like Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, Klamath County is seeing more adults who are vulnerable, isolated, and in need of someone to speak for them. When there is no Power of Attorney in place, and no available family member to step in, the court may appoint a guardian. Public guardians do incredible work—but their capacity is limited. That’s why we need more private guardians—community members who are willing and able to serve.

Whether you’re a family member, a friend, or a compassionate neighbor, becoming a guardian can make a life-changing difference for someone who has no one else. You don’t need a legal background—just a willingness to learn, to advocate, and to care.

If this speaks to you, consider connecting with one of the local resources below to learn more. Guardianship training and support are available.
