Biography

Yetunde Akins MD, MPH, DFAPA is a board-certified psychiatrist in Adult, Child, and Adolescent Psychiatry with a special interest in community psychiatry. She provides compassionate, comprehensive psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults, with a strong commitment to expanding access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health services.

Dr. Akins is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (DFAPA) and a recipient of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship Award. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Jos in Nigeria and her Master of Public Health from George Washington University, strengthening her ability to approach mental health care through both clinical and public health lenses.

Prior to residency, Dr. Akins worked as a Senior Clinical Research Associate at Johns Hopkins University, where she developed a deep passion for behavioral health. She completed her psychiatry residency at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, where she served as Chief Resident, and went on to complete her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Akins joined Sky Lakes Behavioral Health Center as its founding psychiatrist and currently serves as Medical Director. She is dedicated to building systems that reduce barriers to care and ensure patients receive safe, effective, and innovative treatments. Her approach integrates the latest scientific research with individualized care planning, including advanced treatments when appropriate.

She previously served as Medical Director at the local community mental health center in Klamath Falls and currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University, where she trains and supervises nurse practitioners, residents, and medical students.

Dr. Akins has been recognized for her accomplishments by the American Psychiatry Association. Dr Akins professional affiliations include American Psychiatry Association (APA), American Academic of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), American Association for Community Psychiatrists.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling and is an avid reader.
