Dwight grew up as a missionary kid in Nigeria. After medical school, he practiced rural Family Medicine in Washington and Nevada. He was drawn to teaching and taught in Tacoma, WA and Stockton CA, before he helped start the Alaska Family Medicine Residency Program. He spent 13 years teaching residents there before coming to Cascades East. His family, including 3 teenagers, was drawn to the rural farming atmosphere of Klamath Falls. In his spare time Dwight enjoys collecting rocks and minerals, nature photography, mountain biking, backpacking, cross country skiing, sea kayaking, river rafting or any other adventures in the wilderness. He also swims with the Klamath Basin Masters Swim Team.

Medically, Dr. Smith enjoys teaching procedures, including skin flaps and advancements, POCUS, wilderness medicine, obstetrics, emergency care, and rural/frontier medicine. He also appreciates the value of integrating spiritual care into his practice. He has lectured internationally on rural health, obstetrics and ALSO.
