Sky Lakes is Honored by AMA for Commitment to Well-Being of Physicians

Sky Lakes is committed to reduce burnout and enhance the professional fulfillment of doctors that comes from patient care.

Sky Lakes has earned Bronze recognition through the American Medical Association’s Joy in Medicine® Health System Recognition Program. Sky Lakes is one of 92 health systems across the country, and 1 of only 3 in the state of Oregon, to be recognized by the AMA.

This recognition from the country’s leading physician association honors health systems, hospitals, and medical groups that prioritize proven methods to reduce burnout and enhance the professional fulfillment of doctors that comes from patient care. Organizations that meet the rigorous criteria of the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program are leaders in the national effort to transform health care work systems and address the root causes of burnout among care teams.

This national recognition is a meaningful milestone in Sky Lakes’ commitment to making Sky Lakes a place where physicians feel supported, connected, and fulfilled in the work they do.

The AMA recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate concrete efforts to improve physician well-being and address the underlying causes of burnout. That includes listening to physicians, strengthening leadership and teamwork, improving the practice environment, and reducing the burdens that can get in the way of caring for patients.

U.S. physicians are at higher risk for burnout relative to other U.S. workers. Systemic drivers like administrative burden, staffing shortages and stigma around mental health continue to plague the physician experience and contribute to the day-to-day stressors facing physicians today. Continued efforts are essential to ensure doctors receive the support they need to thrive and achieve national health goals.

“We owe special thanks to Dr. Erin Gonzales and Dr. Stewart Decker, whose leadership has been instrumental in this achievement. Their commitment to their colleagues and to a healthier practice environment has helped move this work forward. We are grateful for the time, energy, and thoughtful leadership they have brought to this initiative ” said David Cauble, Sky Lakes president and CEO. Sky Lakes also thanks the physicians, care teams, and staff members who have contributed ideas, shared honest feedback, and helped put improvements into practice.

“Supporting joy in medicine matters because caring for people is deeply meaningful work—and the people providing that care deserve a workplace that supports them. When our physicians and care teams can thrive, our patients and community benefit” shared Cauble.

Bronze recognition gives Sky Lakes a milestone to celebrate and a foundation to build on. Cauble says there is more work ahead, and Sky Lakes will continue listening, learning, and improving together.
