Dans Story

As one, we rise.

As one, we move.

Dan started with a walk. At first, he went as far as he thought he could go in 15 minutes. He huffed. He puffed. He kept going.

“My doctor give me a big hug and said, ‘You’ve basically healed yourself.’”

Dan knew something had to change after a hike that should have felt easier than it did. He and his wife had been active earlier in life. They backpacked before they had kids. But over time, work pulled him inside more and more. When he moved to Klamath, he was pre-diabetic. His weight was up. He had health concerns.

Then he went on a hike in the Sky Lakes Wilderness. Seven miles round trip. Gradual climb. Nothing extreme.
When it was over, he looked at his wife and said, “That really wasn’t that much fun.” The choice felt plain: accept that he could not do those things anymore, or make changes.

“I’m either going to have to accept I
can’t do this anymore, or I got to make some changes.”

His doctor pointed him toward the wellness program at the Wellness Center. Dan was ready. The goals were simple. He did not have to go to the gym every day. He needed to work up to 30 minutes of moderate exercise, five days a week. Walking counted. So he started walking.

At first, he went as far as he thought he could go in 15 minutes. He tracked his exercise. He weighed himself. He recorded the work. Over time, the routine became something he did without having to think about it.

Six months later, he went back for another checkup. His doctor came in, gave him a big hug, and looked over his blood values. Then he got the news, “You’ve basically healed yourself.”By then, Dan was down 119 pounds. He was the first person in the program to lose more than 100 pounds.

“Nine years later, I’m doing the stuff that I like doing.”
