Sky Lakes Medical Center's Diagnostic Imaging Department includes a variety of services to help your physician learn more about your condition. This department has received top grades from both state and federal agencies and accrediting institutions.
Our highly trained staff utilizes state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures to educate, test and diagnose patients. Our services include:
Strong bones are important for your health—the lower your bone density, the higher your risk for fracture. A bone density scan is the best way to measure your bone health.
It can show:
- Whether you have osteoporosis (a disease that makes your bones weak).
- Your risk for breaking bones.
- Your response to osteoporosis treatment.
Causes of low bone mass include family history, not developing good bone mass when you are young, and certain conditions or medicines. Not everyone who has low bone mass gets osteoporosis. But everyone with low bone mass is at higher risk for getting it.
Bone density scan
A bone density scan is a simple, noninvasive test that measures a person's bone density or volume of calcium and minerals within bone tissue.
Bone density scans are available at Sky Lakes Medical Center's Outpatient Imaging Center, Campus Drive and Daggett Avenue, just across from the hospital's main campus.

Who should have one
Your doctor can help determine if you should have a bone density scan. They are recommended if you are age 65 or older, regardless of risk.
If you're younger than 65, you should have a bone density scan if you have one or more of the following risk factors:
- Calcium-deficient diet.
- History of amenorrhea, the abnormal absence of menstruation.
- History of malabsorption.
- Moderate to high alcohol intake.
- Poor nutrition.
- Prolonged treatment with steroids, certain anti-cancer drugs, thyroid hormone and some anti-seizure medications.
- Sedentary lifestyle.
- Significant caffeine consumption.
A bone density scan is a simple, noninvasive and painless exam to measure bone mass in areas such as your spine, hip, wrist and heel. The standard test uses a low-dose x-ray to detect signs of bone thinning and mineral loss.
The scan measures the density of the spine and hip. The forearm is measured in people with hyperparathyroidism or if either hip cannot be scanned.
A bone density scan typically takes about 15 minutes. During the procedure, you will lie on a table scanner, and a technologist will sit next to you throughout the procedure.
A bone density scan requires little preparation. You may eat normally and take medications as prescribed by your doctor the morning of your test.
Do not take any vitamin pills or mineral supplements the morning of your exam. You must not have any exams involving barium or radioisotopes within the last month. These scans interfere with the bone density results.
The results of your bone density scan will be available within five days. This information will help your doctor determine if you're at risk for fractures and require further evaluation. Test results also help you and your doctor plan the best course of action for your bone health.
Cardiac catheterization is a procedure that allows physicians to diagnose or treat heart conditions, as well as to measure blood pressure and blood-oxygen levels. An ultra-thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into the body followed by a thin wire, called a stent, which maintains the open space of an artery.
In 1989, Sky Lakes Medical Center brought in the area's first cardiologist and opened the catheterization labs. Today our services include cardiac catheterization, a special-procedures lab, angiography and pacemaker insertions.
We also perform balloon angioplasty and vascular stenting—procedures designed to open blocked or narrowed arteries—on-site in the catheterization lab.
A CT scanner is a noninvasive medical imaging device that uses x-rays to generate images of the human body. CT scans enable your doctor to view the inside of your body, including bone, muscle, blood vessels and organ systems, in great detail.
CT virtual colonoscopy
CT virtual colonoscopy is an imaging technique that allows a radiologist to look at the large bowel to detect polyps and cancers without the use of sedation, and without inserting a long tube into the colon as in a conventional colonoscopy. Its ease of use allows eligible patients to be screened for early detection, as well as providing a diagnostic alternative for those who are unable to have a conventional colonoscopy.
Early detection is an invaluable weapon in the fight against breast cancer. The American Cancer Society urges women to make regular screening for breast cancer a part of their health plans.
Sky Lakes Breast Health Center has consistently earned top scores from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Oregon Health Division—including a perfect score in a recent inspection.
Sky Lakes Breast Health Center also offers modern stereotactic breast biopsy, a nonsurgical procedure using sophisticated computers to search and define tumor tissue.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive procedure that creates a two-dimensional view of internal organs or structures using strong electromagnetic fields and sophisticated computers.
We have one of Oregon's leading facilities for MRI, offering you the convenience of local diagnosis for many complex medical conditions.
Nuclear medicine uses special chemicals that computers can detect and then use to create an image of your internal organs or bones for physicians and medical technicians to evaluate.
Our nuclear medicine staff tests or treats some 4,000 patients a year. Our equipment includes a special dual-head camera used to examine heart functions or diagnose coronary artery disease.
Nuclear medicine routinely performs other tests such as:
- Gastric reflux studies.
- Kidney studies to isolate cases of recurrent bladder infections.
- Breath tests to detect ulcer-causing bacteria.
- Stress tests to evaluate potential blockages at or near the heart.
- Bone scans to detect disease, infection, tumors and trauma.
- Bone density studies to detect osteoporosis.
Nuclear medicine also provides treatment for thyroid conditions and offers pain management for discomfort associated with some cancer treatment.
Sky Lakes Medical Center's nuclear medicine department offers patients a simultaneous combination PET and CT scan, significantly enhancing the department's diagnostic services.
PET (positron emission tomography) combined with CT (computerized tomography) is a valuable clinical test for cancer, heart disease and neurological disorders.
Unlike other types of diagnostic imaging systems, PET/CT allows physicians to see minute chemical and physiological changes related to metabolism. While other imaging methods provide mainly structural information, PET/CT provides a look at how your body is functioning.
This information aids in the early detection and improved treatment of many diseases, allowing enhanced capabilities in presurgical staging, helping eliminate invasive procedures, enhancing therapy monitoring capabilities and reducing the number of diagnostic tests performed.
For cancer patients, PET/CT is the only way to accurately image many organs at one time to diagnose malignancy, and even provide information about whether or not cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
In addition to cancer studies, PET/CT examines patients for some heart conditions and looks for reversible damage as opposed to permanent heart damage.
PET/CT is also used in neurological studies, investigating brain metabolism in patients with dementia and epilepsy.
PET/CT is a safe and painless procedure that typically takes about one hour to complete.
Ultrasound and echocardiography
Ultrasound imaging is a safe, painless diagnostic procedure that is most commonly used for observing babies inside the womb.
Echocardiography is another form of this procedure that shows colorized images of the beating heart.
There is no injection or radiation involved with either study. Sky Lakes uses a state-of-the-art 3D ultrasound unit that displays pictures with remarkable clarity.
Sky Lakes Medical Center's vascular laboratory uses advanced ultrasound techniques to perform a full range of specialized examinations free from the risks and discomforts of injections and other invasive procedures. These tests can help physicians diagnose and determine the degree of severity of known or suspected vascular disorders.
Clinically skilled registered vascular technologists are specially trained to perform all examinations in the Sky Lakes Medical Center vascular lab.
The Sky Lakes Medical Center vascular laboratory offers a wide range of examinations, including abdominal, arterial, carotid and venous duplex imaging.
X-ray studies use low doses of radiation and are often performed as the initial examination to diagnose a wide variety of diseases and injuries and later in treatment to determine progress.
Sky Lakes Medical Center offers the finest in x-ray services, including specialty rooms and portable units. Additionally, Cascades East Family Medicine Center, a clinical service on the Sky Lakes Medical Center campus, has its own x-ray facilities.
