The installation of a high-end electronic medical record system at Sky Lakes Medical Center means patients and caregivers in Klamath Falls and elsewhere in the region will have easier access to important clinical information.
Leadership from Sky Lakes Medical Center recently agreed to install and implement Epic, the leading electronic health record system, at the Klamath Falls medical center and its physician clinics using the Asante Community Connect program.
The new system will be ready for use next fall.
Rich Rico, Sky Lakes Medical Center's chief financial officer, noted the choice of Epic through the Asante program came after an extensive review process.
"We are pleased to choose Asante as our (information technology) vendor," Rico said. "When the new system is fully operational, it will make exchanges of medical information more efficient compared to our current system, which will help us take care of our patients more efficiently."
The use of a common electronic medical record system," makes it easier for patients and caregivers in Southern Oregon to access patient information in a single, secure record," said Mark Hetz, chief information officer with Asante.
With the new coordinated electronic medical record system, caregivers will have access to all the appropriate clinical information they need at the time and place they need it, and that will improve patient care and safety, reduce unnecessary duplicative tests, and speed up referrals between physicians in the region, Hetz added.
This is helpful in many situations including, for example, an Emergency Department visit for an injury. In such a situation, an ED physician at Sky Lakes will have instant access to the patient's health record and know of any medications, injuries, or other health conditions for which the patient received care at an Asante or at a Sky Lakes facility or physician clinic.
