It was 50 years ago this month that healthcare in the Klamath Basin made a dramatic change: What is now Sky Lakes Medical Center opened its doors and ushered in a new era of local hospital services. On Oct. 10, 1965, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital became the latest in series of local hospitals dating back to 1911. Its opening capped the efforts of some 800 hard-working and tenacious volunteers who collected more than $1.3 million — nearly double the original goal — in a two-year campaign. "Many think our hospital just emerged and has always been there, not realizing the pioneering spirit and generosity of the people in our community that made it possible," noted James Stilwell, who served as general chairman, in recounting the campaign.
