Construction of the first-ever parking garage in Klamath Falls is scheduled to begin September 19 on the west side of Sky Lakes Medical Center.
During the construction, parking will no longer be available on much of the main medical center lot, so Sky Lakes has implemented an assortment of measures to lessen the effect the work will have on normal traffic flow at the medical center and Cascades East Family Medicine.
Patient and visitor parking will move to spaces previously designated for Sky Lakes employees only. Employee parking will move to temporary lots near the medical center. A new lot near Applebee's is nearing completion and will be available for both visitors and employees.
Sky Lakes will have rotating shuttle vehicles available between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily, including weekends, connecting the parking lots and the medical center.
When completed, the new two-level $5 million parking structure will have 333 spaces with two electrical outlets on the lower level for electric cars. It will open in spring 2017.
The parking structure is the first phase of a $50 million project that includes a new four-story 88,000-square-foot collaborative health care building on the northwest corner of the Sky Lakes campus. It will be a clinic setting with educational support space that will facilitate the development of innovative training opportunities for a variety of medical disciplines.
That building, a partnership of Sky Lakes and Oregon Health & Science University, will consolidate several Sky Lakes clinics now in separate locations around Klamath Falls, and will include OHSU education and research offices and the new academic headquarters for the OHSU Campus for Rural Health.
Jenni Giffin, Transportation Supervisor at Sky Lakes Medical Center, adjusts a sign on one of the shuttle vehicles the medical center will use during construction of the first-ever parking garage in Klamath Falls. Two vans will provide shuttle service between the medical center and nearby parking areas during the construction on the main parking lot. The Sky Lakes Shuttle Service will operate 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, including weekends.
