The final Couch to 5K community walk of the summer, taking place today on the OC&E Trail, will have a special guest.

A reporter, John Brant, from the internationally circulated magazine “Runner’s World” will tag along on the walk, which could lead to a potential feature for the program in the magazine. “We feel really honored that they’re considering us,” said Dr. Stephanie Van Dyke, who, along with Katherine Jochim Pope, is opening the Sky Lakes Wellness Center and has led the Couch to 5K lecture series this summer.

The magazine has been increasingly interested in why, as a nation, we have become so unhealthy, and what we can do about it, Van Dyke said. The community health and physical activity aspect of Couch to 5K fits in well with that focus, she said.

Showing off community fitness

Pope and Van Dyke are hoping many members of the community attend the walk to show “Runner’s World” that Klamath Falls and the Basin is working towards improved health, Pope said.

“We’re so proud of what the community has done with the Couch to 5K,” Pope said. “We want this to be the grand finale to a great summer.”

Open to all

The event is open to everyone in the community, including anyone who has not previously attended any Couch to 5K events.

The walk will be on the OC&E Trail, starting at Reeder Road at the Pinegrove Trailhead at 9 a.m. Saturday. The group may split in to smaller groups for those who want to walk, jog, or run the trail, and will likely cover a 5K length, about 3.1 miles.

The trail is beautiful, and all skill levels are welcome, Van Dyke said.

“Every day is a great day to start exercising,” Pope said.
