What Happens When I Have My Baby?
The following information was prepared by our Family Birth Center staff to help make your visit as pleasant as possible. Please call our Family Birth Center, 541-274-6621, for more information or answers to your specific questions.
What to Expect: During Labor
When you arrive, we will discuss your plan of care with you. Your support person is welcome to stay with you after deliver.
There will be:
- Intensive nursing attention ratio of 1-3 patients per nurse;
- We will take your vital signs;
- We will check your urine;
- We will monitor your baby's heart rate and your contractions;
- We may check your cervix;
- Family members awaiting the birth of infants by Cesarean section are asked to wait in the entrance lobby. Because of the procedure, family members should expect to wait at least 2 hours before visiting the new mother and child. A staff member will notify waiting families when they may visit.
What to Expect: After Your Baby is Born
- Less intesive ratio of 6-10 patients per nurse;
- Your baby can remain with you at all times, unless there are special circumstances;
- If you are breastfeeding, your baby will need to nurse every few hours;
- We will be taking your vital signs and checking you, even at night;
- we will need to massage your fundus and assess your bleeding;
- We try to limit how often we wake you up;
- Lab draws begin at 5:30 a.m., but also may be done at other times.

- Family Maternity Outpatient Services (FMOS) Nurse
