Health Services - Diagnostic Imaging

ctmachineimageSky Lakes Medical Center Diagnostic Imaging Department offers patients access to advanced multi-slice computed tomography (CT) scans. Our GE LightSpeed VCT XT 64-slice CT scanner is located on the first floor of the hospital adjacent to Emergency Services. The Diagnostic Imaging Department also offers CT scanning at the Outpatient Imaging Center located at 2900 Daggett Ave.

What is a CT scan?

A CT scanner is a non-invasive medical imaging device that uses X-rays to generate images of the human body. CT scans enable your doctor to view the inside of your body, including bone, muscle, blood vessels and organ systems, in great detail.

With a 64-slice scanner, the image resolution is greatly enhanced because of the number of images that are created in a very short amount of time. It is similar to a camera with a very fast shutter speed that is able to capture fast-moving subjects. The 64-slice scanner actually captures 192 images per second, in a non-invasive, pain-free procedure.

Improved provider quality of care

Images that are created with the CT scanner are fed directly into the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), which allows diagnostic imagery to be shared with any provider using a computer terminal connected to the system. Images are stored digitally, meaning easier retrieval and transfer, and superior image archiving over the long term. The benefits are improved access and overall quality of care.

How does a CT scanner work?

In a CT scan, the X-ray system takes extremely detailed cross-sectional images of the patient's body. Using that data  a ctimagecomputer then generates the desired images. This aids the physician in reliably and precisely visualizing, and then diagnosing, the presence or absence of disease or injury.

The CT examination is called "scanning."  Scanning is a computer-controlled electronic procedure comparable to digital photography. Whether you call it a scan or an image, after the examination the patient and physician will be able to see an extraordinarily precise image of the inside of the body.
